FAQs
If you can't find the answers to your questions below, please contact me.
How do I care for my naturally dyed item?
Washing - All items should be gently hand washed in warm water with a pH neutral detergent. Strong acidic or basic soaps can change the color and feel of your items. The only exception to hand washing are our cotton items. These can be washed in the clothes washer in a normal cycle, without the use of bleaching agents.
Drying - Knitted items should lay flat to dry. Eco-printed silks and wool shawls can be hung to dry. Pillowcases/Tea Towels can be dried in the dryer. All items can be ironed at the appropriate setting.
Will the color fade?
You can keep your colors bright and strong by storing them out of the sunlight and washing them gently. I have taken great care to properly clean and mordant your naturally dyed items so that the colors stay strongly bonded. However, with naturally dyed items colors can fade over time. This is the nature and beauty of natural dyes.
Some color may come off on your fingers when knitting with naturally dyed yarns. This is particularly true with indigo, madder, and cochineal. It is a normal reaction between the oils on your hands and any pigment that may be left unbonded on the surface of the yarn. It won’t effect the color of your yarn.
Can you tell me about your yarns/fabrics?
I only use natural fibers and non-superwash yarns. This is part of my commitment to not adding more plastic or toxic chemicals to the environment.
The fabrics that I use are sourced from a number of companies that create sustainably, ethically, and through fair trade.
Where do your medicines come from?
With the exception of plants that will not grow in my area, most of my herbs are gathered directly from my gardens and woods.
My gardens are organically grown and any teas, medicines, or consumables I create are crafted with organic ingredients.
Where do your dyes come from?
Many of my plant dyes are hand gathered from my gardens and the forests surrounding my home. I also use dried plant material and extracts purchased from quality natural dyeing businesses.
What is a mordant? Do you mordant your yarn/fibers?
Mordants are substances that assist dyes in bonding with fiber. Some plant dyes do not require mordanting. They have the chemicals within them to mordant themselves in the dyeing process. If a dye does need a mordant, I use such things as oak galls, or metal salts like aluminum sulfate or acetate, or ferrous sulfate.
What is Ecoprinting?
Ecoprinting is the magical alchemy that occurs when you combine plants, water, heat, pressure, and a bit of time. It is a type of natural dyeing that creates everything from bold plant prints to flowing watercolor effects using plants.
